Every October, Delhi NCR has the same argument about green crackers in the same WhatsApp groups. One side says Diwali without crackers isn't Diwali. The other side says the air in November is already unbreathable. Somewhere in the middle, a family with a new baby, a retired couple with a heart condition and a household with a terrified dog just want to know what's actually allowed.
Green crackers are where the law currently tries to meet both sides. Here is what green crackers are, what the rules were last year, what to watch this year, and how a society can plan a Diwali that doesn't end in a feud.
Are green crackers allowed in Delhi NCR for Diwali 2026?
The 2025 permission was a temporary trial, so the answer for 2026 depends on this year's orders. Watch for a fresh order from the Supreme Court and notifications from your state and district administration in October.
Here is what happened last year. On 15 October 2025, the Supreme Court permitted the sale of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR from 18 to 21 October, and bursting only between 6–7 am and 8–10 pm, on the day before Diwali and on Diwali itself, DD News reported. The court asked pollution boards to monitor air quality during that period and report back.
In August 2026, the court asked the Central Pollution Control Board to examine whether any limited relaxation of noise standards could be considered for Diwali. It did not approve louder crackers or lift pollution controls, as Open Magazine explained. Diwali falls on 8 November this year, so expect clarity in October.

What exactly are green crackers?
Green crackers are lower-emission firecrackers developed under CSIR-NEERI's supervision. They change the chemical formula, use smaller amounts of polluting material and try to suppress dust. They're less polluting than traditional crackers, but not pollution-free.
That last point matters. A society where 300 flats burst "green" crackers at the same hour still produces a lot of smoke and noise. Green crackers make the celebration less harmful; they don't make it harmless.
How do you identify real green crackers?
Check the QR code and the NEERI green logo on the box, and buy only from licensed sellers. Genuine green crackers carry traceable identification, including a QR code you can scan.
- Scan the QR code on the box. It should open a verification page with the manufacturer's details.
- Look for the green NEERI logo printed on the packaging, not a sticker slapped on later.
- Buy from a licensed shop during the permitted sale window. Roadside stalls outside that window are the most common source of fakes.
- Be suspicious of "green" labels without a QR code, or boxes that don't scan.
- Don't buy online unless the rules for your city explicitly allow it; most permissions were for licensed offline sale.
Can you burst crackers inside your housing society?
Only within the legal time windows, and only where your society's rules allow. An RWA can set reasonable rules for common areas, like a designated open spot away from parking, dry leaves and car covers. It can't override court or government orders in either direction.
Places that should always be off-limits:
- Balconies and terraces of high-rise towers
- Basements and covered parking
- Near gas pipelines, electrical panels and generator rooms
- Right outside the windows of flats with infants, elderly or unwell residents

A society Diwali plan that actually works
Agree one time, one place and one set of rules, and publish it a week early. Most Diwali fights are about surprise, not crackers, and they usually play out in the group chat. We wrote about why every housing society WhatsApp group eventually turns toxic on LinkedIn.
- Fix a common bursting slot within the legal window, for example 8–9 pm.
- Mark one open area, with buckets of water and sand and a first-aid kit ready.
- Nominate two adult volunteers to supervise kids.
- Put up a notice for pet owners and elderly residents so they can close windows and plan ahead.
- Collect used crackers and debris the next morning; don't leave it for the housekeeping staff alone.
- Offer a no-cracker alternative, like a diya-lighting, rangoli contest or community dinner, for families who'd rather skip them.
Plenty of NCR societies have moved to a shared cultural evening with a short, supervised cracker window. It tends to be the calmest Diwali they've had in years. If you want more ideas for the weekend itself, our guide to things to do in Delhi NCR near you lists how to find local melas and events beyond the big venues.
What about pets, babies and elderly neighbours?
Warn them in advance and give them a quiet window. Dogs and cats can panic and run, and street dogs suffer too. Elderly residents with heart or breathing conditions struggle most on the night the air quality drops.
A simple message a few days ahead, saying "We'll be bursting crackers only between 8 and 9 pm in the east lawn", lets those families prepare. It costs nothing and it prevents most of the bitterness.
What happens if someone bursts crackers outside the allowed hours?
Local police can act on complaints, and the society can raise it through its own rules. Repeat late-night bursting is one of the most common Diwali complaints in NCR high-rises, especially after 10 pm when children and elderly residents are trying to sleep.
The calm way to handle it: note the time and location, speak to the flat directly the next morning, and involve the committee only if it keeps happening. For anything unsafe, like crackers thrown toward parked cars, dry grass or people, call 112 right away. A little patience on the night and a clear rule for next year usually works better than a public fight in the group chat. If your society is planning a shared, supervised celebration instead, an Event post on PadosXO lets verified neighbours nearby know the time and place; How It Works explains the post types.
Planning your society's Diwali evening? Make it one event, not 200 separate ones.
Post an Event with the time, place and rules for your society's celebration, so verified neighbours around you know what's happening, pet owners can plan, and the no-cracker families have somewhere to join in.

- Buy only QR-verified, NEERI-marked green crackers from licensed sellers.
- Burst only in the permitted time windows.
- Use an open, supervised spot, never balconies or basements.
